NYT: Transgender Woman Cites Attacks and Abuse in Men’s Prison

Trans Woman Cites Attack

Ashley Diamond, 36, reports to the The New York Times how she was denied her rights while placed in a men’s prison in Georgia. Punishments ranged from being raped at least seven times, being mocked as a “he-she thing,” and being placed in solitary confinement for “pretending to be a woman.”

“Every day I struggle with trying to stay alive and not wanting to die. Sometimes I think being a martyr would be better than having to live with all this.”

This article explores policy on transgender inmates as well as actions including the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
