Production designer Michael Shaw explained some of the choices he makes for inmates’ cell decor to Entertainment Weekly in the May 29/June 5, 2015 issue. Below are some of the highlights:
“Russian nesting dolls? Red. Jesus pics? Sister Ingalls. Candy wrappers? Probably Big Boo. ‘The camera never lingers over anything too long, so you want to give it a really quick read,’ says Shaw of everyone’s personal decor. ‘Some of them pop out and are very instant.'”
“‘With color, it’s always an opportunity,’ says Shaw of Red’s multi-hued quilt. ‘It’s implied that she made it, bargained for it, or was given it as a gift. She had to read as a special case. It can’t look like something [Red] could just buy at the commissary.'”
