OITNB’s Asian Problem: Their Stories “Either Don’t Exist or Don’t Matter”

Wesley Yiin of Salon critiques the writers of Orange is the new Black for neglecting to fully develop Chang and Brook Soso in a way that contributes to major and minor plot lines of the first three seasons of the Netflix dramedy. The cast has expanded in every race but the Asian population, which may be statistically on point, but the fact that the number of white and black prisoners is nearly equal clearly conveys the idea that the writers are not going for statistical accuracy.

“If ‘Every sentence is a story’—a claim displayed proudly on the posters for Orange Is the New Black—then the show’s writers currently seem to be implying that Asian-American stories either don’t exist or don’t matter.”
