Netflix revealed on Friday that Orange is the new Black has been renewed for THREE MORE SEASONS! Furthermore, creator Jenji Kohan will remain in control of this prison ship for seasons 5, 6, and 7.
Kohan, in an excited statement, said, “Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don’t live in those cultures.”
Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix, stated that, “Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal and impactful series that is both funny and dramatic, outrageous and heartfelt. Audiences around the world have come to love the ladies and men of Orange is the New Black, and we are eager to see where three more seasons will take them.”
Season 4 is set to be released on June 17 this year.
On a side note, these next four seasons of Orange will be crucial, in terms of social justice reform, the series’ plot, and the characters. These may be the last four seasons we get, seeing as the ladies of Litchfield’s sentences are dwindling as we speak. Furthermore, due to increased awareness in the media about the prison industrial complex, and with Democratic presidential candidate forerunner Bernie Sanders running for office, who has promised to enact the legal reform necessary to take people like Nicky Nichols and Poussey Washington out of prison, we may be seeing some change sooner than we expected.
