Dascha Polanco: “Latinas and Black Women Have to Unite”
Dacha Polanco (Dayanara Diaz) said that she was turned down for a small role last year because she was “too urban to play a Harvard girl.” Now that she’s landed the role of Jennifer Lawrence’s best friend in their latest film, Joy, Polanco is even more career-minded than ever.
“I consider myself an Afro-Latina. I have African, European, and Taino roots . . . So for me to walk around and not embrace that I am a black woman would be ignorant. Latinas and black women have to unite.” Polanco says that her diverse ethnic background could expand the amount of roles open to her. “I could be a Southern bell if you need me to,” she jests.
Polanco believes that the racist entertainment industry is changing, but for further action to take place, black and Latinas have to unite.
